This is the English edition of the best-selling comic “Distant Lands, Neighboring Countries 9 – Korea” (Sae Mon Nara Iun Nara 9 – Uri Nara). The book aims to introduce foreigners to the real aspects of Korea, which are sometimes misunderstood or unknown to them. Using skillfully selected topics – e.g. spicy food, education fever, conglomerates, the tensions between North and South Korea – Won-bok Rhie explores the unique manifestations of the Korean mentality, which are often misunderstood by foreigners. It is a fascinating exploration of the Korean way of thinking, intertwining history, sociology and cultural anthropology. The insightful discussions about Korea's position between China and Japan, its more familiar neighbors, also clarify who the Korean people are.
