After chronicling his stay in the Chinese special economic zone in "Shenzhen", Guy Delisle describes his journey to one of the most isolated countries in the world, North Korea, in the sequel "Pyongyang". Here, he worked for two months as a supervisor for a French animation production.
With George Orwell's classic "1984" in his luggage, the French-Canadian comic author begins his service in a country where Orwell's nightmare scenario can be measured against reality. In detailed drawings, Guy Delisle reports on people who are cut off from electricity at night, while the monuments of the Il-Sung dynasty shine brightly. "Pyongyang" is less a classic travelogue than an impressive attempt to look behind state-staged events and cultural barriers – a comic that, given political developments, could hardly be more relevant.
